The science worked. The instrument around it could not be built twice the same way, serviced in the field, or documented well enough to be used clinically. We rebuilt the architecture without restarting the product.

Perception, motion control and safety had been developed by different people at different times. Each was defensible on its own. Together they produced behaviour nobody could predict.
